A controversial custody centre planned for Salfords, could boost Surrey jobs in construction.
According to Get Surrey, the Salfords centre will consists out of a 30-cell suite and will mean the closure of the Reigate Police Station.
The current Reigate station only has 12 holding cells.
Fears have been voiced from residents in Salfords that the move could lead to crime increasing in the area.
Tony Craig, a resident of Salfords commented to the news provider: “Crime, release of detainees and those returning on bail will affect the surrounding areas with impacts on rates of assault, theft of motor cars and burglary.
“Much criminality is known to result from those awaiting trial or on bail for offences.”
After a recent meeting in one of Salfords Village Hall’s smaller rooms, residents were furious for not being notified of the gathering in the first place. Most had to hear from a neighbour and they couldn’t all fit in the tiny meeting area.
According to the Redhill and Reigate Life, Surrey Police will hold a second public meeting, this time in the main hall of Salfords Village Hall on March 16. The purpose of the meeting will be to clear-up any uncertainty regarding the custody cells for Salfords.
Although an increase of criminals is worrying for East Surrey, having no place to keep them is even more disturbing.
The developments will not only boost jobs in construction within the area but it could also create new jobs for police personnel.
